The Prunus is the subfamily Prunoideae of the family Rosaceae. Almond is just one kind of Prunus, which is the seed of this tree. The almond comes from the Middle East but spreads widely to Iran, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Israel, Lebanon, Syria, and Turkey. It is one kind of tree which loses its leaves every year. The young shoots change their colour from green to purple and then to grey the next year. The flowers of almonds have five petals and the colour of them is white or pale pink. In early spring, the flower will come out singly or in pairs before the leaves.

The durpe of alond is about 3.5-6 cm long. There is a downy coat outside it. Further outside is the hull with a a leathery grey-green colour, which has the edible kernel inside a hard shell. The nut commonly relates to the cooking term. In general, one kernel is present, but sometimes two. But, almond is a drupe but not a nut in botanical terms.

Whether raw almonds or roasted almonds, they can all be eaten directly. They could also be added in the dishes. Besides, they can used as decoration on the top of desserts, such as, sundaes and other ice cream based dishes. The baklava and nougat are also need almonds. The almond butter is welcomed by comsumers who are allergic to peanut because they look like peanut butter. Besides, almond butter is not so salty, which is good to our health. When the fruit of the almond tree is still young and developing, we can eat all parts of it, because at that time, the outside of fruit is fleshy and green and the inner shell is soft. In the Middle East, they are added in one popular snack to avoild its sour taste.

Thus, almonds are said that they can make people smarter and live longer. In Ayurveda and Unani Tibb, almond oil is called Roghan Badam. Through cold extraction, we can get the almond oil. As the nutritive aphrodisiac, they can used for massage and internal consumption. The elements in the almonds are found that they have the abilities of boosting immunity and avoiding hepatotoxicity etc according to recent studies.

Almonds are reported to be good for our cardio-vascular system, as a kind of nuts. Because, it is a fact that nuts could lower the occurance of coronary heart disease based on the research results, which were published in the British Journal of Nutrition by Kelly JH and Sabate J. In the study, the subjects were asked to take nuts 4 times a week. The result is that there is a 37% reduced risk of coronary heart disease compared with the people who doní»t eat nuts. There is an average 8.3% reduced risk of coronary heart disease if people can eat additional nuts per week.

Even though almonds have so many advantages, some people worry almonds may make them heavy. Good news is this fear is groundless according to the journal Obesity. However, the one who doní»t take nuts at all will have the more opportunity to gain weight than the one who take almond nuts at least tiwce a week. In the International Journal of Obesity and Related Metabolic Disorders, one study showed that 65 overweight and obese adults agreed that an almond-enriched low calorie diet can help overweight individuals lose weight more effectively than a low calorie diet high in complex carbohydrates.
